Survivors
Jon woke up with a statement resonating through his head “there
will be no survivors” He couldn’t remember the dream that it was from, just
the phrase. Well despite such an unusual way to start one’s day, Jon kept on
and did what he usually did every day during summer, bike around with his buds.
Well, two grass stains and three bruises later it was time for lunch and Jon was
home with his mother who had made lunch, ham sandwiches and chips. “Wow Mom
such creativity in your meals” Jon said jokingly. “Eat up boy, that is
unfortunately what amounts to creativity on my part” “Sheesh Mom you don’t need
to speak so smart, we aren’t at work” “First off its talk and second off I’m
sorry but it’s a habit, one they strictly enforce at Harvard.” Jon dug into his
meal. Halfway through the two course meal Jon asked “Hey mom have you been at
work?” “Umm no why you ask?” “Cause I haven’t seen you for like two days” “Ah
ha ha ha, sorry about that I’ve been studying some really interesting stuff down
in the basement” “Oh well ok Mom do whatever makes you happy, but if I forget
your name, just remember its not my fault” Jon now scarfing his last sour cream
and onion chip ran off the door and biked off to the far distance.
Jon rested in his bed after a long afternoon
of biking, laughing and public displays of stupidity. He drifted right off to
sleep as children do, free from worry. But that night as he slumbered Jon had a
very strange dream. In his dream he could hear “There will be no survivors”
over and over again. Jon irritated at the sound follows and tries to find its
source. After long hours of walking through abandoned streets and empty houses
he finds himself back at his house. Suddenly Jon is in his houses basement/lab
and he finds the source of the infurious noise, it’s an old radio. Jon reaches
out to grab it but it disappears in a puff of dangerous looking orange clouds.
But before it completely goes away Jon hears it say one more time “There will
be no survivors”
Jon woke up and found himself in his basement. “Huh, that’s strange, I must
have walked in my sleep” Jon looked around the lab staring at the strange tubes
and glass instruments covering the tables. Tired of observing this boring
scientific alien room, Jon turns around to go up the stairs. In his reckless
fast turn he knocked over a sealed glass tube. Jon tries to catch the tube but
he is too slow and it shatters to a thousand pieces on the floor. Jon was about
to say “Oh man I’m gonna have to clean this mess up before I go back to bed,”
but he was stopped, stopped by the orange mist rising from the shards of glass. |
